Emergency ServicesEmergency Services is one of the three primary CAP missions. ES functions focus on search & rescue and disaster relief. Searches can be for nearly anything - overdue aircraft, snowmobiles, boats, cars, hikers, etc. Searches can be from aircraft or by ground teams. CAP also does support missions, such as transporting avalanche rescue teams to remote sites, or delivering Alaska State Trooper's search dogs. The ES officer is responsible for training new aircrew (mission pilots, transport pilots, observers, scanners) and ground teams, planning the practice exercises, maintaining qualifications records, and conducting the quarterly ES training classes. |
| AK SAR Grids |
We have a new SAR resource available for our
use here in Alaska. Scott Lanis, a South Dakota Wing member, maintains a
nifty "ES Resource" website, and on it, he recently posted a PDF
copy of the old Alaska RCC handout that describes our unique SAR grid
system. He has also taken our 15 major grid areas and created a PDF file
for each, using sectional scale (1:500,000) charts and ruling them down to
the quarter grids (ex. - 70A, 70B, 70C, and 70D). Each major area file is
between 15 and 25 megabytes, so if you're using a dial-up connection, they
could take awhile to download; but, once the files that you want are on
your hard drive, you have a very convenient, computer-based map reference
available at your fingertips. The web URL is www.cap-es.net
You'll see a link for "CAP Grids". Click on that and then click on "Alaska Grids" and you'll see the links for the 15 major Alaskan grid areas. It looks like the page is still under construction with empty space next to the links, where Scott will add a reference map with the 15 areas depicted. If you have any suggestions for improving the site, just drop Scott an email. |
