Polaris Composite Squadron Meeting Notes
April 8, 2008
- Ed Kornfield with the Wing glider program
has issued a notice of a pre-season glider and tow pilot refresher to be
held April 18-20 at the Birchwood Squadron. Any qualified CAP members who
are interested in participating in the program are also invited. We need
Glider Flight Instructors, Glider Orientation Pilots, Towplane Pilots, and
Ground Personnel. If you have an interest in working in the glider program
in any capacity, please contact Ed Kornfield at 227-2525 or ekornfield@gci.net
<mailto:ekornfield@gci.net>.
- Skip will be acting commander while Kevin is out of town April 14-18.
Kevin can still be reached by email if necessary.
- We have plenty of time on all aircraft. Available are 2 C-206 and a
Beaver.
- The SAREX was not able to launch any flights due to the weather. So we
are rescheduling flights for this weekend. A sign up sheet will be posted
downstairs after the meeting. Mel will be the flight release for Saturday
and Kevin will be the flight release for Sunday.
- The hanger bi-fold door has re-experienced the problem of last year
where the brake will not release when the door is activated. This causes
the motor to work against the brake, which in a few seconds will overload
the electrical circuit and pop the breaker. If this happens to you,
release the button when you hear the bad sound, try to go the other
direction, and go back and forth to see if the brake will release. If you
pop the breaker, the electrical panel is in the furnace room.
- The airport released a notice about the airplane wash reopening for the
season. This wash rack is located at the base of the rotating beacon
across the street from Northern Lights Avionics. This wash area has a sand
and oil separator to treat the water before it is discharged into the
storm sewer. The regular MRI storm sewer inlets flow to Chester Creek. If
you are washing your plane, please be environmentally friendly.
- Marc Stella presented the safety spiel. His message is the eyes have it.
We use our eyes from preflight and all throughout the flight phase. Glare
will aggregate eye problems, although Marc does not advocate the use of
sun glasses. In 1968 Marc suffered an eye injury due to muzzle blast. Eye
exercises restored his vision, and he advocates the usefulness of this
therapy.
