Polaris Composite Squadron Meeting Notes
August 28, 2007

Marc taught driving to ambulance crews in California for many years. He developed a safe driving program that has proven itself over many emergency ambulance runs. He calls it Fail Safe Driving.

1.Maintain situational awareness of the traffic around you at all times. Be aware and drive defensively for traffic within the next 5 seconds, and the 5 seconds after that. So be very aware of everything you will encounter within the next 10 seconds ahead.

2.Check to your rear. Use all three mirrors, the two outside mirrors and your rear view mirror.

3.Maintain separation between you and the cars around you. Maintain a 3 second distance between you and the car in front of you. Maintain 2 seconds between you and the car behind you. Adjust your spacing to maintain a side cushion along both sides of your vehicle in case you need to make an evasive maneuver.

4.Add space in front if the space in the rear gets too short. This leaves more options. The same if cars impact your side cushion.

5.If rainy, add 1 second to the car in front. If foggy, add 2 seconds. If the road has ice or snow, add at least 3 seconds to the dry pavement 3 seconds.
