aviation pioneer for SAS and who flew across
the pole with his wife Ingrid passed away.
- Cadet news. Two cadets received scholarships for getting their glider
ratings. Congratulations.
- Safety Spiel – FAA is encouraging people to fly with a CFI to brush
off the cobwebs this spring. The idea is to help prevent spring accidents
caused by lack of proficiency.
- There is a controlled firing range just west of Eielson AFB that is
used to fire heavy artillery. The range safety officer is asking that
pilots be advised that the range is now active after several years of
inactivity. The Army is having trouble getting the FAA to issue a NOTAM,to
the range safety officer is asking all aviation organizations to notify
members.
- Phil Bach relayed a story about the Vernair Hanger that was torn down
this past fall to make room for expansion of 5^th Avenue. Phil was just a
teenager when the new hanger was dedicated. Bill Piper attended the
dedication. The Piper Colt had just been introduced at the astonishing
price of $4,995 to compete with the Cessna 150 which was priced at $6,995.
Phil thought Piper had a great idea.
- Make sure your MIMS account is updated. Wing is going to reduce the
order for flight suits and survival gear for those members who are not
updated in MIMS.
- A Veterans BBQ will be held at the Palmer Airport on April 26.
- A member advised to watch for birds in the patterns of all airports.
Many of these are migrating birds who are not familiar with our metal
birds that share the airspace.
- Sunday afternoon, May 18, at 1 PM will be the Squadron Spring Cleanup.
As usual, this will be a barbecue. Bring a side dish to share.
- Michele recently presented her refueling safety briefing to the
Birchwood Squadron.
